About Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring

Meet Dr. Marissa Witt-Doerring, a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in managing withdrawal syndromes and safe tapering. Drawing on her extensive experience and collaboration with patients, Dr. Witt-Doerring creates customized taper plans and introduces creative treatment strategies to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Her long-term mission is to spread awareness and education among fellow practitioners about the dangers of stopping medications without safe tapers and the growing prevalence of protracted withdrawal.

Dr. Witt-Doerring is passionate about reducing polypharmacy and thoughtfully assessing her patients’ medication lists. She aims to empower patients and their families through education and informed consent to make treatment choices that align with their values and goals. Some patients may seek her help to safely stop a medication, while others come to manage their medication in a prudent manner.

COMMITTED TO TRAUMA-INFORMED TREATMENTS

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Witt-Doerring has a special interest in the long-term and under-recognized effects of trauma. She presents healing options from a spectrum of training paradigms and lets the patient decide which feels right to pursue. This includes psychedelic therapy, trauma-focused therapy such as sensorimotor and EMDR, mindfulness, nutritional supplements, and traditional psychotropic treatments. She also focuses on nervous system dysfunction and sympathetic overactivation to treat symptoms that may not have traditionally been associated with PTSD.

Dr. Witt-Doerring completed her undergraduate studies at Emory University with honors in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology. She received her medical degree at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where she was recognized as the top student in psychiatry. She completed her residency training in general psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the Teaching Award.

During her early years of training, Dr. Witt-Doerring served as a quality improvement expert, speaking at neighboring hospitals and international conferences on how to improve emergency stroke treatment protocols following successful implementation at her medical university hospital. She was recognized with the Award for Excellence in Teamwork in Quality Improvement by the Society for Hospital Medicine and the American Heart Association Target Stroke Honor Roll. Dr. Witt-Doerring also spent dedicated research years managing neurological clinical trials.

With her commitment to patient education and personalized treatment plans, patients can trust that they are in capable hands when seeking care from Dr. Witt-Doerring Pyschiatry.
